AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization. It is the discipline of writing and structuring content so that "answer engines," systems that extract and surface a single direct answer rather than a list of links, can find, understand, and confidently use your content as that answer. Featured snippets, voice assistant responses, and AI Overviews all work this way: they pull one specific passage, not the whole page.

AEO and GEO (generative engine optimization, covered on its own page) are closely related and the terms are often used interchangeably in practice. The distinction worth keeping in mind: AEO is about being extracted as a direct, single answer, while GEO is the broader discipline of being retrieved and cited by generative systems that synthesize an answer from multiple sources. Most of the tactics overlap.

What "being the answer" actually requires

An answer engine needs to find a clear, self-contained answer close to the top of the page, or immediately under a heading that matches the question. Answers buried three paragraphs into a rambling introduction, however accurate, are far less likely to be extracted than the same fact stated plainly in the first sentence after a question-shaped heading.

  • A direct, one-to-three-sentence answer immediately after the question, before any elaboration.
  • Question-shaped headings that mirror how people actually search ("How much does X cost" rather than a clever, ambiguous heading).
  • FAQ schema markup that explicitly tells search engines which text on the page answers which question.
  • Lists, tables, and step-by-step structure for anything that is naturally a list, step sequence, or comparison, since those formats are the easiest for answer engines to extract cleanly.

Structured data's real role

Schema markup, especially FAQPage and HowTo schema, does not directly cause a page to be featured, but it removes ambiguity about what the visible text on the page means. It is the difference between an answer engine guessing at your content's structure and being told explicitly. Pages with correctly implemented FAQ schema are considerably more likely to be considered for extraction than visually identical pages without it.

Why concise beats comprehensive, for this specific goal

A page can be both comprehensive and AEO-friendly, but the two goals pull in slightly different directions at the paragraph level. A comprehensive article explores nuance and caveats. An AEO-optimized passage states the core answer as plainly and briefly as possible, then lets the nuance live in the surrounding content. The fix is not to write shorter articles overall, it is to make sure the direct answer exists somewhere on the page in that plain, extractable form, even if the full article goes on to explain the exceptions.

The most common failure

The single most common reason a page with genuinely good, accurate information never gets extracted is structural: the answer exists somewhere in the article, but it is never stated plainly and immediately under a matching heading. Answer engines are pattern-matching systems, not careful readers. If the pattern is not there, the content does not get pulled, no matter how correct it is.
