The Shift in Search Behavior

Every major search experience now has an AI layer. Not all of them work the same way.

AI search covers the growing set of ways people find answers through AI systems instead of a traditional list of blue links: Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT Search, Claude, Perplexity, and AI assistants built into browsers and operating systems. Each platform works differently under the hood.

"AI search" is not one product or one algorithm. It is a set of distinct systems, Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT Search, Claude, Perplexity, and others, that each sit on top of different underlying data and different citation logic, but that all share one real consequence for content owners: more searches now end in a synthesized answer, with or without a click through to a source.

The good news for anyone who already takes SEO seriously: the overlap between what makes content rank well traditionally and what makes it perform well in AI search is large, estimated at around 80 percent by most people who study both closely. The differences that remain are specific enough to be worth understanding platform by platform.

What genuinely changes

The most discussed change is "zero-click" search: a growing share of queries get fully answered inside the search results page or the AI chat window itself, with no click to any source site. This does not mean traffic disappears everywhere, but it does mean click-through rate for a given ranking position has been trending down for informational queries in particular, while commercial and transactional queries have been more resilient.

Google AI Overviews

Google's AI Overviews pull primarily from pages that already rank well in Google's traditional organic results for the query. A page with no organic ranking presence is unlikely to appear in the Overview for that same query. This is the clearest evidence that traditional SEO fundamentals remain the gatekeeper, even for Google's own AI-generated answers.

ChatGPT Search

ChatGPT Search runs on Bing's search index for its live web results, not Google's. This has a direct, practical implication: being well-indexed and visible in Bing (and Bing Webmaster Tools, covered on its own page) matters for ChatGPT Search visibility in a way many sites overlook entirely because they only think about Google.

Perplexity

Perplexity uses its own crawler and citation logic, distinct from both Google and Bing, and tends to favor sources it judges as authoritative and current, with a visible preference for citing multiple sources per answer rather than a single dominant one. Content with clear, well-sourced factual claims performs consistently well here.

Claude

Claude, Anthropic's AI assistant, is positioned more as a research and work tool than a public search product, but it grounds answers in live web results the same way the others do: when web search is enabled, in Claude.ai or through the API, it retrieves current pages and cites the specific sources it drew from directly in the response. The same fundamentals that earn a citation elsewhere, a clear, well-sourced, directly stated answer, apply here too.

What stays the same across all of them

Every one of these systems still needs your content to be crawlable, indexed, and structured clearly enough to be retrieved and trusted. None of them reward vague, generic, or unsourced content just because it is optimized for "AI." The platforms differ in mechanism, not in what they consider good content.

How InkSTR tracks AI search visibility

Instead of manually checking each platform, InkSTR surfaces AI search performance in one place.

  • The AI Visibility dashboard tracks citations and mentions across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews for your target keywords.
  • Content generation and Bing Webmaster submission run through the same platform, since ChatGPT Search visibility depends on Bing indexing, a connection most tools handle separately or not at all.
